Georgia Ann Aletha Dixon ¹

  General Notes:

Georgia was named for the State of Georgia and after her Grandmother, Aletha (Leathy) Elizabeth Whittle. She had five brothers and was the only girl. She and Jasper lived with her mother, Eliza Clements Dixon, older brother John Jefferson and his wife Lydia Carter until 1869. She and Jasper had their first child, Homer, in 1868 in Stewart or Webster County prior to moving to Enterprise, Florida in 1869. My father’s name came from one of her younger brothers was Marshall Lafayette (Coot) Dixon who died from a fall in 1894.

Georgia was a high spirited lady, and said what was on her mind. I have been told that she would curse you out in a heart beat when needed. She ran an Inn for many years at Cooks Ferry/Osceola after Jasper’s death.

In Later years she lived in Geneva by Buck Lake where she died November 18, 1937. She is buried next to Jasper in the Geneva Cemetery.

She spent several days with each of her children each month. She looked forward to these visits.

Courtney Nicholson Porter said that Georgia taught her how to darn and tat. She also said that Uncle Bunny (Ira Tillis) was her favorite grandchild. He spent much time with her as a child. He was Grandmother Nicholson’s pet.

Georgia married James Jasper Nicholson, son of Archibald Nicholson and Mary Elizabeth Hall, on 1 Nov 1866 in Preston, Webster Co., GA. (James Jasper Nicholson was born on 30 Nov 1843 in Stewart Co., GA and died in 1887 in Geneva, Orange/Seminole Co., FL.)
