General Notes:
Duncan and Mary are buried in the old Carter-Dixon Cemetery, Centerpoint Road, Webster Co., GA.
Duncan was born in Scotland and came to America and married Mary Blackman about 1808 in North Carolina. It is believed that he came from Scorrsbrea Skye, Scotland and came to Cape Fear, North Carolina sometime before 1809 possibly with his parents. (Daniel or Archibald Nicholson born before 1755 may be his father). The ship that transported the Skye emigrants was the MIDLOTHIAN under the command of one Cpt. Stewart. The Nicholson’s added the H to their name after leaving Scotland.
Duncan is listed in the 1810 Moore County, NC census. 1830 Randolph County, GA census. 1840 and 1850 Stewart County, Georgia, census. 1860 Pike County, Alabama census.
Duncan came to Houston County, GA around 1821-24 and to Stewart County in the late 1830’s. He moved to Brundage, Pike County, AL about 1853.
A photograph of the old fellow shows him wearing spectacles. From this I would assume that he was literate.
